Here’s how to keep your packages safe.
Porch robbers are in trouble. DC residents can now pick up their Amazon packages at local police stations to make sure they’re safe. Here’s what you need to know about the new plan – the first of its kind in the country.
What is the initiative?
DC is the first city in the entire country to implement this plan in an effort to combat package theft. The Metropolitan Police Department unveiled new Amazon locks on Tuesday. Residents can now head to the Sixth District location in Deanwood (5002 Hayes St., NE) or the library in Anacostia (2701 Pennsylvania Ave., SE) to pick up Amazon boxes. If the program is successful, Amazon and MPD hope to expand to other locations across town.
How do I send my packages to the station?
When DC-area residents order on Amazon, they see an option to deliver to one of the police departments. You can choose which locations you want to take your package to, then use Bluetooth on your phone to activate the locks when they arrive.
Anything else?
Residents can check out beautiful photos when picking up packages. The lockers are decorated with artwork by students at Randle Highlands Elementary School. Amazon donated $15,000 to the school to thank them for their efforts.
