In just three years, Bessie Afnaim Corral and Oliver Corral have achieved what many young designers dream of. In February 2020, his label, Arje, which is known and loved for its trophy status shearling jackets and coats, was carried by every major retailer, from Net-A-Porter to Selfridges. Then the first wave of the Covid-19 pendant hit. No one shopping for clothes, let alone a $ 3,000 shearling; everyone is stuck at home. When retailers began canceling orders, Corrals, who met as co-head designer of Donna Karan’s Urban Zen (and is now married), made a radical decision: They would pivot to sell earth goods and eventually eliminate its clothing archive.

Despite not having formal interior design training, Corrals channeled his creative energy to transform a Manhattan one-bedroom duplex gut that had previously been a design studio and living room. Their Instagram stories from last year look like what Magnolia Network might be if Chip and Joanna Gaines really into DIY-ing Venetian plaster archways and cover the walls in hundreds of fluted oak panels while wearing cream-colored outfits. The result: Arje Home, a Mediterranean-inspired apartment where everything from Re Jin Lee ceramics and Nordic Knots rugs to Jessalyn Brooks color and art index books are framed. The Corrals also work with upstate manufacturers on private-label furniture, including a dining table made with walnut beams reclaimed from a 150-year-old barn and shearling-covered lounge chairs that look a lot like one of their old suits. “The way we make clothes is the same as we see the space,” said Afnaim Corral. “It’s not like we give up on fashion,” added her husband. “We just don’t want to do it as usual.”

Corrals intuition that taste is taste — whether you’re referring to a suit or a chair — tapping into a broader trend among consumers and fashion brands, which seems inevitable by the nesting presence required by a wave of lockdowns. “As people spend more time on earth during the pandemic, our homeware category becomes stronger,” said Liane Wiggins, head of women’s clothing purchasing at Matchesfashion. “Our customers are looking for ways to inject joy into their surroundings, and we are seeing a shift to investing in homeware pieces because there is little opportunity to dress in and out.” Matchesfashion vertically presents decorations from more than 75 lines, ranging from global luxury brands such as Brunello Cucinelli, Max Mara, and Jil Sander to independent homeware labels including Tina Vaia (ceramic sculpture), Yinka Ilori (agile patterned tableware), and Bernadette ( flowers). -print linens). And despite the gradual easing of the pandemic ban, the Delta variant remains furious, with homeware sales rising more than 30 percent this year.

Making perhaps the most exciting homeware debut on Matchesfashion this fall is Saunders; it’s the first collection from Jonathan Saunders since he stepped down from his role as DVF chief creative officer in 2017 and has fringed suede pillows and knitted throws. The Scottish designer, who also makes one-off pieces of furniture, dyed fabrics at his home in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and even set up a screen printing table in the living room. The book looks to present a combination of colors, patterns, and textures and features models in zigzag throws or sweaters made from the same recycled yarn. “I like the idea that the line between fashion and interiors is blurred,” he says. “There’s an element of self -expression in the way you put together clothes. And of course, your earth is also a canvas.”

The greater demand for earth appliances has offered an important lifeline to many independent clothing labels for an odd 20 months. “We’ve seen a lot of success stories from brands that previously existed in other departments go into the homeware space,” said Lea Cranfield, chief purchasing and trading officer for Net-A-Porter, pointing to the popularity of cashmere blankets from ready-made labels such as Erdem. and JW Anderson, as well as Gabriela Hearst, who’s debuting a limited edition dead stock blanket for the holiday that presents tie fabric from its Spring 2021 collection. “We have also seen similar success from our jewelry brands, such as Completedworks and Anissa Kermiche, which have branched out to now include decorative homeware pieces,” adds Cranfield. “Vasna is very good for us.”

During the initial lockout in London last year, Kermiche alone saw demand skyrocket for his signature Love Handles vase (which resembles a woman’s hips and thighs, with a handle that is right on the neck) and ceramic pieces whose names ask that celebrate women’s shapes. In three months, stocks that were planned for all of 2020 disappeared. Kermiche linked the sudden hype to “this personal invasion of social media.” When we are stuck on earth with Instagram and TikTok as the main way for social interaction, thanks to the constraints of social distance, our followers see more of our interior lives than ever before – to say nothing about our colleagues now seeing into us. home on Zoom. “It not only looks great on the outside with good clothes, but also your earth can’t look such shit anymore,” Kermiche said. “I see earthly things such as earthly clothes.” She’s adding several styles to her home “clothing” for the holidays, including a butter plate, a butter plate inspired by Fernando Botero’s exaggerated volume, and a Sugar Tits pot, a glass coupe with a ceramic lid shaped full breast and nipple piercing.

“Home is, after all, the place that best reflects who we are.”

Designers in even the highest echelons of fashion are catering to our still home-centric lifestyle needs. In late August, draw sofas were even bigger than the demicouture party dresses at Dolce & amp; The Alta Moda Gabbana event in Venice, where Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana launched the first furniture line, Dolce & Gabbana Casa. “[We] dream of building a habitat that is‘ adapted ’to your personality, your passions, and your tastes,” said the installation designer at the soaring 16th-century guild that features examples of Italian crafts such as Murano glass, hand- painted Sicilian ceramics, and Upholstered furniture in lush handwoven brocades on traditional looms. “Home is, after all, the place that best reflects who we are.”

A week ago in Milan, Supersalone, the 2021 edition of the Salone del Mobile design exhibition-and the first since 2019-looks very much such a fashion week thanks to the increase in participating fashion brands, from Off-White to Hermès. Some pay tribute to the classic design. Dior launched its Medallion Chair project, which saw 17 architects and designers – including Indian Mahdavi, Dimorestudio, Joy de Rohan Chabot, and Khaled El Mays – re -interpret the Louis XVI style chairs that once worked in the couture salon of founder Christian Dior. Both Piana Interiors feature Gabetti e Isola Bul-Bo floor lamps of the 1960s that have essentially a bulb made of cashmere.

To save work-from-the-earth time, Gucci is launching a new category, Gucci Lifestyle, with pop-up cartridges that sell elegant stationery items such as GG Supreme notebooks, sticky notes, and zip-up boxes filled with colored pencils. d’Ache. . Meanwhile, Louis Vuitton is digitally launching a Campana Brothers modular room split made of colorful avocado-shaped pieces and a Raw-Edges table inspired by the night sky.

The famous theme in Supersalone is safe-Covid entertainment on earth. MissoniHome presented outdoor sofas and square poufs covered with the brand’s signature zigzag pattern. Elsewhere, bar cabinets came in several iterations; they can be found with paisley walls (Etro Home Interiors) and shaped like Medusa’s head (Versace Home). Armani/Casa introduces helpful kitchen utensils such as rolling pins and spaghetti sizes in a beautiful turquoise marble-effect resin. “What I love about homeware is that, unlike clothing or jewelry or shoes, you can actually share it with friends,” says La DoubleJ founder J.J. Martin, who saw ready-to-wear sales decline last year while porcelain plates were riotously patterned and table linen sold on the roof. Martin bets on a good season for intimate in-house entertaining. He introduces a gilded Napoleonic dining plate (in La DoubleJ pink, of course) – and luxurious hostess pajamas with fur trim, for those who want to go it all.
