Grand Designs fans are drooling over the paper work and ‘struck’ by Home of the Year

Grand Designs viewers were left unimpressed with the Royal Institute of British Architects shortlist for House of the Year on Wednesday night after ‘clear winner’ Parchment House failed to make the shortlist.

In a series of special episodes visiting houses shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA Award – and thus devoid of the usual stress, panic and financial woes – host Kevin McCloud and co got to see just a few of the year’s most impressive ‘afters’.

The night category focused on renovations and buildings that have been updated and transformed to bring them to the height of sophistication.

There was the Dutch Barn sitting in its eight-acre public garden, the Cow Shed magically transformed into a magnificent library, and a Victorian two-flat joined by a “futuristic zinc cube”.

However, it was Parchment House that stole people’s hearts as owners Charlie and Jane proudly displayed their unique two-list house in the print shop, which has been sensitively extended through the ruins of two separate buildings.

Their architect son Will’s clever ‘building-within-a-building’ design used glass walls and leftover rubble to form an extension to the house, taking the previously ‘ivy covered’ brick walls.

Unfortunately, this video is no longer available.

#GrandDesigns Parchment House is simply amazing.

So clever. So, very, very pleasing to the eye. So homey. Exactly.

If I lived in that house, I’d probably want to be outside all the time to admire it.

Will’s attention to detail and preservation was admirable as he encouraged his parents to keep the rusty nails in place in the walls as well as the lime paint splashed on the other.

The renovation work was overseen by an archaeologist who happened to discover something valuable – which they did, in the form of an ancient stone bath.

The judges praised Parchment House’s use of old and new material and how they “introduced each other and encouraged them to be friends”.

‘Parchment House is the one, it’s a winner, what an absolute triumph,’ one fan declared, while another added on Twitter: ‘A sensitive intervention resulting in a beautiful home. A real winner in my opinion.’

A third fan agreed, writing: ‘Clear winner – the definition of thinking outside the box.’

Unfortunately, this was not to be, as Dutch Barn and Mews House instead progressed to the next round of House of the Year.

Love the parchment house so based on last week’s judges choice for the love child of Tesco express and leisure center Balham won’t be shortlisted â¹ï¸#GrandDesigns

Week 2 of #granddesigns Houses of the Year. Week 2 I didn’t pick any of the houses shortlisted for the final. Shows what I know. I can’t believe the Parchment Factory wasn’t selected. It was absolutely amazing.

disgusted this didn’t make the shortlist. Nothing more to say.

‘I can’t believe the Parchment Factory [sic] wasn’t chosen. It was absolutely amazing,’ one stunned fan shared, while another grumbled: ‘Wrong again.’

One viewer pleaded: ‘It’s been robbed!! @granddesigns come on.’

‘Disgusted that this didn’t make the shortlist. I have nothing more to say,’ said one outraged viewer.

House of the Year judges praised the shortlisted Dutch barn for its ‘quite unique’ blend of a private building amidst a public open garden, while the Mews House’s sustainability credentials and generous timber staircase impressed.

Grand Designs continues on Wednesday at 9pm on Channel 4.
