Kolkata, Nov 2 (SocialNews.XYZ) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday demanded that the Supreme Court oversee a judicial inquiry into the recent bridge collapse in Morbi, Gujarat, which killed more than 130 people.
“Accidents are not always in our control. But at the same time, it should be seen that the right organization gets the right task. I heard that the government there (in Gujarat) did not give enough help to the families of the victims. The bridge at Morbi was allowed to be used by the public before its renovation work was completed properly.
“This was done in haste keeping in mind the upcoming Assembly elections there. Hence, I feel there should be an SC monitored inquiry into the matter,” Banerjee told media before leaving for Chennai on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister will be in Chennai to attend the 80th birth anniversary celebrations of West Bengal Governor La Ganesan’s elder brother.
She is also supposed to hold a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader M.K. Stalin in Chennai.
Speaking to reporters here, Banerjee also asked why central investigation agencies like CBI and ED are not looking into the irregularities in the tender process for the renovation of the bridge.
“People’s lives are more important than politics. The way the bridge was maintained was nothing short of a crime,” she said.
The chief minister also hit out at the Center and the BJP over the Union Home Ministry’s decision to grant Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis and Christians coming from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and currently living in Mehsana and Anand districts in Gujarat.
“We are completely against such decisions which are aimed at serving narrow political interests. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the upcoming Assembly elections in Gujarat. We will not tolerate such things in West Bengal,” she said.
