The Grand Island Public Library wants to “go without.”

The Grand Island Public Library could be “free.”

The library board will discuss it at 5 p.m. meeting on Monday at the library at 1124 W. Second St. The fine waiver is something other Nebraska libraries are doing, including Omaha, Hastings and Kearney, library director Celine Swan said.

“Nationally, libraries have started to bring back people to the library for free to bring back people who might not use it because they might have a fine from long ago and are afraid to come back,” Swan said. “The library wants to work with people to help get the fines removed, if we can.”

Grand Island library patrons don’t make much from royalties, Swan said.

“We really don’t have much,” she said. “Out of our total budget, I’d say it’s probably a very, very small percentage.”

GIPL has been waiving late fees since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020. Part of Monday’s discussion will be whether to continue charging fees this fall.

“We were just trying to help people, because they don’t need one more thing to worry about,” Swan said. “We tried to work with people if they couldn’t come back because they were sick, or even if they had to quarantine the books, we gave them extra time and didn’t charge any fines.

New challenges facing Grand Island families in 2022, such as inflation, Swan said.

“We need to be aware of our community and be able to help people, because many of these people are people who need to be in the library using our resources, maybe looking for a job or using our materials to save money,” she said. “There are many positives in working with people.”

The library does not suffer from a lack of visitors. Patron participation remained strong throughout the pandemic and increased as restrictions continued to ease.

According to information provided to GIPL board members, the library had more than 9,000 visits every month from March to May this year.

“Our library has gone through hard times, as libraries have through the ages,” Swan said. “They are very resilient. They are coming back. Here we have information for people. Our library is a community center for everyone, of all ages.”

She added: “We are in a position right now to continue to help even more with the way the world is right now.”
