The refurbishment of the historic Kirkwood Railway Station gains steam; construction series for 2024

KIRKWOOD – A few years’ effort to give the historic Kirkwood train station its first complete renovation since 1941 is gaining momentum this month as the city moves forward with design plans and $ 2.5 million in funding federal awaits state approval.

Kirkwood City Council on Thursday voted unanimously to approve a contract with Mackey Mitchell Architects of up to $ 451,500 to complete the design work for the multimillion-dollar project. The company has worked at the Missouri Botanical Garden and the St. Paul Zoo. Louis, among other local institutions, and has led the 2018 renovation of the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum in downtown St. Louis. Louis.

An icon of downtown Kirkwood that appears on the city’s logo, the distinctive train depot built in 1893 is included in the National Register of Historic Places.

But the historic building has long been on the verge of deteriorating. Your needs include a new roof and air conditioning system, along with new bathrooms, doors, floors, windows and lighting. Renovation plans also include better accessibility for people with disabilities, a new storage building, a redesigned parking lot and a new platform canopy similar to the original.

“We feel like we’re gaining ground,” said Art McDonnell, president of the Kirkwood Train Station Foundation, a nonprofit fundraiser for the project, and the mayor of Kirkwood from 2008 to 2016. “We’re confident that we will succeed and that this wonderful building will be preserved for many future generations. “

The city bought the station on Union Pacific Railroad for nearly $ 1 million in 2003 in hopes of keeping it preserved and in operation. Today, it remains an active station serving the Amtrak Missouri River Runner route that travels once a day in each direction between St. Louis and Kansas City. The city also rents the tank with wooden panels for small events.

According to plans for the design, construction on the project will begin in late 2024 and could be completed as early as 2025, Kirkwood City engineer Chris Krueger said this week.

In a 2020 grant application, the city estimated the project would cost $ 4.6 million, though that could change when construction begins due to rising costs, Krueger said.

The plan has been in place for more than eight years, led by the city with the help of the Kirkwood Train Station Foundation.

To date, the city and foundation have raised about $ 2.5 million, most of it from a $ 1.5 million grant from the East-West Gateway Governing Council in 2021.

And more federal money may arrive soon: $ 2.5 million in federal funds is set aside for the project in the $ 49 billion Missouri spending plan approved earlier this month by the Legislature. The funds would require a 50-50 item in local spending. The proposal is pending the signing of Gov. Mike Parson.

In order to raise the corresponding funds, if approved, the foundation continues to raise funds, McDonnell said.

“The largest private donation we’ve gotten so far is $ 100,000,” he said, though he didn’t specify the donor. “And then it comes down to a 3-year-old who loves trains by putting $ 2 in the pickup box.”

McDonnell, sitting at a chessboard at the station one recent afternoon, pointed to a grandfather, Tom Staeley, who was teaching train models to his 3-year-old grandson Gus.

“That’s what it’s all about,” McDonnell said.

Staeley, who lives south of St. Louis County. Louis said he received his love for trains from his father’s lifetime and took his own three children to the station to watch the trains almost once a week during his childhood. That day, his grandson excitedly waited for the Amtrak to arrive, asking his grandfather questions about the types of trains.

“Hopefully they can keep the Amtrak coming,” Staeley said. “And I’d love to see this place restored.”

Light snow falls as an eastbound Amtrak passenger train enters Kirkwood Station shortly before 9 a.m. of Wednesday, December 17, 2008.

“Kirkwood was founded because of the railroad,” McDonnell said. “And so there’s always been a Kirkwood train station.”

The city, which now has about 28,000 inhabitants, was one of the first planned suburbs in St. Louis County. Louis for its location along the railroad tracks.

Even the name of the town has a train connection: James Pugh Kirkwood was an engineer and surveyor on the Pacific Railroad.

An original depot was built on the site of the present station in 1853 during the early years of the Missouri train journey. The building that stands today was completed in 1893 and originally had an entrance made to accommodate stagecoaches along with separate waiting rooms for gentlemen and ladies.

The station was used for years for commuter routes with, in 1900, 14 trains a day running between Kirkwood and downtown St. Louis. Louis, according to the historical account of the foundation station.

The station underwent a major renovation in 1941, which led to its current layout, making entry easier for cars instead of horses, among other improvements.

Pacific Railroad owned the land for more than 150 years and sold it to Kirkwood for $ 1 million in 2003.

“We don’t want the station to be in the hands of an individual who can use the site for other purposes,” City Administrator Mike Brown told the Post-Dispatch in 2003. “It’s the centerpiece of Kirkwood.”

That same year, Amtrak in the face of budget cuts chose to remove staff members from the station box office. Brown and other city officials in response called for volunteers and 199 people showed up for a first meeting about giving their time, according to a 2013 story in the Post-Dispatch.

Today the station is managed entirely by about 60 volunteers along with a paid station manager, according to City Hall staff.

In 2019, the station served about 50,000 runners, but this was significantly reduced near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and also when Amtrak opted earlier this year to go down from two to a daily trip on the Missouri River Runner route.

“I hope that changes, that we get two trains back,” said Bud Moss, a retired train enthusiast and electrical engineer who has volunteered at Kirkwood train station most Wednesdays for the past 20 years. “It’s a big old station and, you know, there’s nothing like traveling by train.”

The Kirkwood Train Foundation is organizing a fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. June 9 at Kirkwood’s Station Plaza. The event will feature a concert by Matt Jordan. Admission is free, but the foundation will take donations.
