Jennifer Noelle, Managing Partner, Tripidi.
In this unprecedented period where DF & TR store developments are difficult to reach, specialist German retailer Tripidi has begun full operations of the Frankfurt International Airport Terminal 1 outlet (Z gates behind security) where it was previously a sub-tenant.
Tripidi has been running a 50 square meter space in the store operated by Swedish book company Pocket Shop since 2015. It finally assumed control of the full outlet containing 125 sq m on 5 February 2021.
Founded in December 2012, the company, which launched its first WeChat Mini Program to provide a convenient shopping solution for its Chinese customers last September, opened its inaugural store at Frankfurt Airport in October 2013.
At the same time it also introduced a click-and-pick service (arrival / departure) and a global home delivery concept. In addition, Tripidi runs an adult online store providing free worldwide shipping for orders in excess of € 130 ($ 144).
The name of the company comes from a melodic extension of the English word travel. With Chinese customers its main target audience, the word Tripidi has been translated into Mandarin and actually means “place for special things”.
Tripidi has six shops, four at Frankfurt Airport and two at Vienna Airport. Currently, only two shops are open in Frankfurt (the aforementioned outlet it has taken over and its other T1 air side Non-Schengen shop where the B gates are located).
Specialist German retailer Tripidi now has full control of its previously outsourced Frankfurt International Airport Terminal 1 outlet which is located behind security where the Z gates are located.
Jennifer Noelle, Managing Partner, Tripidi told TRBusiness: â € œIn 2015, we decided we wanted to be in the area of Frankfurt Airport, from which non-Schengen Lufthansa flights take off.
“We moved in with only 50 square feet at our disposal and put in some furniture.” Four years later, Pocket Shop decided they wanted to relocate and their contract was canceled last March.
Following negotiations with airport operator Fraport, Tripidi was given permission to take over the full space. â € œWe undertook a lot of reconstruction work and carried out new furniture including shops in Lamy and Victorinox.
“The goal was to do that in March 2020 ahead of the summer flight schedule and Easter holidays, but the impact of Covid-19 and the March 16 confinement in Germany meant that everything was stopped.”
Regarding the in-store assortment, Noelle commented: “As in all our stores, we have a huge assortment of writing tools made in Germany.”
Tripidi undertook a major reconstruction of the 125 square meters before opening the new store earlier this month.
In addition to a souvenir / gift range, we have incorporated a coronavirus assortment for adults and children including disinfectants, hand wipes and different types of masks. The purpose of these things is to ensure safe travel and to meet the needs of passengers.
“Besides everything else, it’s a Tripidi shop with the usual range of high-quality products, especially for the long-distance Asian destinations that will be back soon.”
During the pandemic, the German retailer left no stone unturned trying to stay in touch with its Chinese customers.
â € œWe offered an electronic service with home delivery of course and tried to stay connected to our Chinese customers via WeChat. Currently, we are still working on ways to make the WeChat platform more convenient for our Chinese customers to shop online.
“Cargo was also hit by the pandemic, so delivery to and from China was not easy during certain periods of the crisis.”
The company launched its first WeChat mini-program last September.
Sketching her hopes for the rest of the year, Noelle is confident that passenger numbers will begin to recover before the summer. In the meantime, Tripidi is working on a number of initiatives to continue the business now and ensure that it can capitalize on the recovery as it unfolds.
“We are trying to find some new online channels to sell and are looking to resume talks with airports with which we talked about opening stores in 2019.”
She concluded: â € œWe are sure to travel and especially international travel will improve. Our goal is to be ready for when the world can travel again
Regarding China’s willingness to travel abroad after the restrictions were lifted, Noelle said: “Travel specialists from China indicate that the Chinese people still have a strong interest in traveling abroad and then buying, of course.
“We are confident that Chinese travelers will return and that we will have plenty of them in our shops.”
