And on that topic, only in Newry would a TK Max building made of corrugated metal be allowed without any aesthetically pleasing features in the neighborhood!
Newry’s Merchant’s Quay has had an inferiority complex for decades. Home to many of the extraordinary buildings of our City, previous incredible planning decisions have greatly contributed to the decay of the area. Fortunately, things are starting to move in the right direction with the renovation of the Customs House and the stunning last year’s restoration of 15 Merchant’s Quaya, now called the Commercial House.
Development on the corner of Merchant’s Quay and Cornmarket also promises to improve the look of the area, but only if planners, developers and the council can overcome the car parking delay. On the one hand we are told to indulge more in active travel and use public transport more, while on the other hand we are told that we need more parking spaces. And in a city full of parking lots!
The Argos building is not listed, but Trade Quay 38 and 39 date from 1840-1859. years and was once a warehouse at a time when the canal was still in use. The Department of Communities website explains that only the front wall has survived from the original structure, while everything else has been demolished and rebuilt with modern materials. The building is located directly opposite the scales on the side of the Merchant’s Quay canal which could also have been connected to the space.
The building is listed in the 1863 valuation as if it had been rented by William B Glenny to Alexander Arbuthnot and John Nesbitt (No. 38) and Hugh J. Wallace (No. 39).
