China Chamber of Commerce Contributes Shs 40m Towards Makerere Centenary Celebrations

The China Chamber of Commerce in Uganda donated 40 million to Makerere University for the school’s centenary celebrations.

Makerere this year is marking 100 years of building a changed society.

The university has organized a series of events under the theme, “Makerere at 100,” to celebrate 100, and to raise funds for various projects carried out by this organization.

When they received the 40 million check on Thursday, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe applauded the Embassy of China in Uganda, and the China Chamber of Commerce for the support and cooperation provided by Makerere.

The Economic and Commercial Chamber’s advisor, Mr. Jiang Jiqing congratulated Makerere on celebrating his 100th anniversary, and outlined several areas he would work with Makerere.

“I believe that there are many areas where we can cooperate with Makerere, that is, Health, agriculture, trade, Computer Science, cultural exchanges among others,” said Jiang Jiqing.

Zheng Biao, one of the representatives of the China Chamber of Commerce said it was “a great honor” to be in Makerere as the University celebrates its 100th anniversary.

“Makerere has grown from a technical school to a Prestigious University. As a Chamber we are proud to be here together with Makerere,” he said.

China Chamber of Commerce has more than 100 companies under it in different sectors.

The Chamber of Commerce has seen projects like Isimba Dam, Rennovation of Entebbe Airport, Mbale Business park among others.

“So we are committed to the Buy Uganda Build Uganda project,” said Zheng Biao.

Meanwhile, the China Chamber of Commerce signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Makerere to establish a partnership to train business graduates and prepare them for work life through job fairs among Chinese communities.
