West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday demanded a Supreme Court-monitored judicial inquiry into the recent bridge collapse in Morbi, Gujarat, which killed more than 130 people. “Accidents are not always in our control. But at the same time, it should be seen that the right organization gets the right task. I heard that the government there (in Gujarat) did not give enough help to the families of the victims. The bridge at Morbi was allowed to be used by the public before its renovation work was properly completed. “This was done in a hurry keeping in mind the upcoming Assembly elections there. Therefore, I think there should be an SC monitored inquiry into the matter,” Banerjee told media before leaving for Chennai on Wednesday. The Prime Minister will be in Chennai to attend the 80th birth anniversary celebrations of the elder brother of West Bengal Governor La Ganesan. She is also supposed to hold a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader MK Stalin in Chennai. Talking to reporters here there, Banerjee also questioned why central investigation agencies like CBI and ED are not investigating the irregularities in the bidding process for the renovation of the bridge. “People’s lives are more important than politics. The way the bridge was maintained was nothing short of a crime,” she said. The Chief Minister also hit out at the Center and the BJP over the Union Home Ministry’s decision to grant Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis and Christians coming from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and currently living in Mehsana and Anand districts in Gujarat. “We are completely against such decisions which are aimed at serving narrow political interests. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the upcoming Assembly elections in Gujarat. We will not tolerate such things in West Bengal,” she said. –IANS src/arm(Only the title and image of this report may have been rewritten by the Business Standard staff; the rest of the content is automatically generated from a syndicated feed.)
