Mamata demands SC-supervised probe into Morbi bridge collapse

“Accidents are not always in our control. But at the same time, it has to be seen that the organization is given the right job. I heard that the local government (Gujarat) is not giving enough help to the families. Morbi Bridge was allowed to be used by the public before its renovation work was properly completed.

“This has been done in haste keeping in mind the upcoming Assembly elections there. So, I feel there should be an SC-monitored inquiry into the matter,” Banerjee told reporters before leaving for Chennai on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister will be in Chennai to attend the 80th birth anniversary celebrations of West Bengal Governor La Ganesan’s elder brother.

He is also scheduled to hold a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader MK Stalin in Chennai.

While talking to reporters here, Banerjee also asked why central investigation agencies like CBI and ED are not looking into the irregularities in the bridge renovation process.

“People’s lives are more important than politics. The way the bridge was maintained was nothing but a crime,” he said.

The Prime Minister also slammed the Center and the BJP over the Union Home Ministry’s decision to grant Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and currently live in Mehsana and Anand districts of Gujarat.

“We are totally opposed to such decisions which are meant to serve the weak political interests. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections. We will not tolerate such things in West Bengal,” he said.
