Five months after a groundbreaking operation marked the ceremonial beginning of long-awaited reconstruction at dusty Chittick Field, Occidental Petroleum Corporation stepped forward Monday with a $1 million donation that will be added to more than $6 million in provincial grants and bonds. which will turn the 16-acre Central Long beach site into a full-service sports facility.
Phase one of the project is expected to begin in mid-April and will include the construction of two youth soccer fields, an adult soccer field, a regulated soccer field, a 400m all-weather athletic track, a parking area for approximately 136 vehicles and a cycle path connecting the area with the nearby Pacific Electric bike path.
“Occidental Petroleum’s act of great civic citizenship will benefit families in our community for years to come,” Mayor Foster said at a news conference where an oversized check from Oxy was accepted on behalf of the City of Long Beach by the nonprofit Partners of Parks. . “This generous donation will help improve an area of the city that is seriously lacking in open space and recreational opportunities for young people.”
