Pinggu Village B&B “Living By The Mountain” / DAGA Architect

Textual descriptions are provided by the architect. The project is located in Qianjishan village, Liujiadian City, at the foot of Mount Yaji, which is a famous Taoist cultural shrine in Beijing’s Pinggu District. Its location is ideal, surrounded by mountains and rivers, and from the entrance, you can clearly see the northeast Taoist temple, Bixia Yuanjun Temple on Mount Yaji, the famous Taoist temple in eastern Beijing. Every April, when peach blooms are in full bloom in Pinggu, Mount Yaji attracts many nature lovers who come to immerse themselves in this peach forest scene.

This two -level project of around 300 sqm has been designed using rectangular interlacing and superimposition to achieve the composition of spatial blocks in the earth. The main body of the building is used as the main block, from which small blocks are inserted for variation, and similar blocks are interspersed.

The inclusion of a large number of right angles gives the building a completely different temperament from its surroundings, both on the façade and inside. Regular connections between broken windows and doors and floor-to-ceiling windows are added to increase the permeability of the building to the outside world. A part of the first-floor entrance has been removed to create a natural canopy.

The external extension of the window also uses an irregular rectangular structure interspersed with spatial composition to make the interplay of the building’s entire mass more visible. Windows of the same size in the original building have been converted into rectangular lenses of various shapes and positions. Efforts to separate the uniformity of the peach garden scene into several landscape paintings.

Combining a rougher texture paint with a finer wood finish is a good combination. The facade color is a warm yellow texture paint with a choice of wood veneer as well as a warm tone. Combined with the warm yellow lights of the interior, it seems to speak warmly to come through. The use of warm wall lights on the exterior walls to illuminate the walls, unlike the coming and going of natural light, brings an pleasant sensation that can be savored for a long time.

External stairs are attached to the building surface at a 45 ° angle, providing an additional link between the internal room and the rooftop, as well as giving more flexibility to the space. When entering the interior space, the open design of the first floor allows communication with the outside world and reflects the open and inclusive of the building itself. On the first floor, there is an area bar, which is made of stone and marble slabs to create a sense of relaxation and integration with nature.

In the original building, the second floor is a closed corridor, and the interior is dark due to lack of light. Therefore, two light patios are provided above the second floor corridor and stairwell respectively during the renovation, which not only bring sunlight into the second floor corridor, so that residents can enjoy the change of sunlight all the time but also. open the boundary between the second floor and the rooftop. Standing on the rooftop and looking at the Yaji Mountains, the scenery outside the B&B contrasts with the noisy and agile fast-paced city as if it were a paradise where the pause button of city life has been pressed.
