The cafeteria named after Captain Scott’s ship opens in the Devonport building, listed as a “flatiron.”

The team behind the successful Rockets and Rascals cafe in Plymouth have opened a new restaurant at the Class II Devonport-listed Crown Hotel “flatiron” following a £1m renovation. The new Terra Nova Cafe is named after the ship used by Devonport-born Captain Robert Falcon Scott on his ill-fated mission to the South Pole.

In fact, the Terra Nova venue opened for business on March 29 – exactly 110 years after Captain Scott’s death in Antarctica and sits not far from the Mount Wise memorial statue to one of Plymouth’s most famous sons. His arrival is also seen as further evidence of Devonport’s transformation from a postwar slum into one of Plymouth’s most sought-after areas.

The outlet is the third business now run by Rockets and Rascals boss Steve Toze, following the opening of the Black Cat Surf Club on Plymstock Broadway. And like that place and Rockets and Rascals, Terra Nova Cafe will serve up the kind of “all day brunch, lunch and coffee” the company has become famous for.

Jason Green, manager at Terra Nova, said the cafe had created three full-time positions, and two part-time positions with more staff likely to be recruited. He said: “The opening went really well and we have been very well received. It’s great to be a part of the transformation of this area.”

A 26-cover cafe has been created on the ground floor of the former five-story Crown Hotel. It will also feature outside seating in the future and extend into the basement where the “corner” is being created, featuring a sofa and large table.

This building is one of the few 18th century buildings to survive the Second World War Plymouth Blitz. Built in the 1790s, opened as a hotel in 1880 and registered in the 1990s, the building was last used as a base for the Routeways charity before it was moved.

The building has a “flatiron” shape, the name given to the wedge-shaped corner building after the famous Flatiron stack in New York, USA. It was purchased by husband-wife developers Jim and Lisa Woodley in 2016 for around £200,000 and later underwent a £1 million renovation.

Mr and Mrs Woodley’s Direct Property Services company, which specializes in rejuvenating older buildings, converted the top three floors into 10 flats, a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments, all now fully possible.

The ground floor and basement were to be used as commercial space, under planning approval, and now the owner has left the floor for the Terra Nova business.

Mr Woodley said renovating the building was “quite challenging” due to its listed status and required the removal and replacement of 70 sash windows to maintain its 18th-century appearance. But he proudly said: “It was a beautiful conversion and I am happy with the way it all came together. Our business is about giving new life to old buildings and I enjoy it.”

Since the first decades of the 21st century, a large amount of investment has been made into Devonport, replacing tired post-war flats with new housing and regenerating former industrial and naval estates. Vision’s housing development in the former South Yard Enclave of Devonport Dockyard, the Real Idea transformation of the Guildhall and Market Hall, and Mount Wise (Devon) Ltd’s work on the former Admiralty House naval base, next to the cricket ground, have attracted attention. -example capture

Mr Woodley said: “A significant amount of private investment has gone into this area. We wouldn’t have taken this if it weren’t for the continued development of Mount Wise.”
