A savvy couple have managed to turn a derelict office block into a beautiful and welcoming family home, adding £142,000 to the property’s value, while expecting their second child.
Transformation of a house from a dark office to a family home
Holly Grocott and her partner Mike, both 33, paid £245,000 for their Cheshire home in March 2020 and it’s fair to say they had a small project on their hands with the place.
Left empty for 18 months before their move-in date, the property, which was built in 1930, had previously been used as a site office for a local housing estate and “was not in good condition”.
There was an overgrown garden, plus the little problem that there was no soil anywhere.
However, the couple saw a lot of potential in their new home, which included three double bedrooms, a main bathroom, downstairs cloakroom, lounge area and kitchen diner. Plenty of space for a young family to make it their own.

With a vision in mind, Holly and Mike set to work on a complete renovation to turn the property into a happy family home, while Holly was pregnant with their second child, Emmeline.
In order to keep costs down, the couple – who are also parents to three-year-old Ellis – were able to do the majority of the work on their own.
Professional electrician Mike worked 12 hour days throughout the first lockdown, re-wiring and re-plumbing the whole house while social media designer Holly focused on budgeting, interior decorating, ordering of materials and paint.
They worked together as a team when it came to sorting out the kitchen and laundry room, which they fitted out themselves while Holly was eight months pregnant.
While restoring their home to a livable standard, Holly, Mike and Ellis lived with their family, before moving in to complete their decorating chores together.
At this point, they had at least one working bathroom, but it would take another six months before they had a kitchen sorted, with the downstairs still in need of renovation.
Holly described the hardest part of the process as “being pregnant while having a two-year-old during a winter pandemic renovation.”
Things were particularly difficult in January 2021 because they had an outside door opened which meant the house was “freezing”. At this point, Holly was already five months pregnant, with a toddler to chase after.
Holly said: ‘I did the dishes in the bath and cooked all the meals in the microwave in the living room as we didn’t have a kitchen. As it was lockdown, we had nowhere to go and couldn’t get any help from family. It was truly a labor of love and we put our blood, sweat and tears into it – not to mention all our money.”
The building is now completely unrecognizable with new flooring, decor and furniture plus a bespoke kitchen making the once uninhabitable property a home.
Despite these changes, the character of the house has been carefully retained, with a number of original features remaining. This includes the fireplace in the living room, a stained glass front door, floor tiles in the hallway, banisters, bay windows, interior doors, baseboards and picture rails.
The couple spent £45,000 on renovations which, from start to finish, took 18 months. It is thanks to their hard work that the value of the property has now soared to £387,000.
Holly said: “One of my favorite rooms is the first one we finished – the master bathroom. I love how the floor and wall tiles worked so well with the marble and wood details of the antique sink, as well as the antique brass hardware. I think this piece epitomizes the look we wanted to achieve everywhere. We’re so pleased with the finished look [of the house] because it’s exactly what we envisioned – a blend of traditional design with modern elements.
