When a $4.2 million construction project at Boys & Girls Club of Camarillo completed in the spring, this nearly 40,000 square foot building will allow even more children to participate.
“We never want to turn down children,” said club CEO Roberto Martinez. “We want to make sure that we can grow with the community, grow with the city, so that children always have a place to go.”
Boys & The Girls Club added about 6,500 square feet to its existing 33,000-square-foot facility on Temple Avenue and renovated 18,000 square feet of it, he said.
The club started the project in October, but this will not be the building’s first facelift.
The nonprofit has served Camarillo since 1967 and moved to its current location in 1973, Martinez said. In the last five decades, Boys & Girls Club has added a building three times.
Among the additions is an 8,000 square foot gym built in 1985, which the kids enrolled in summer camp say is one of their favorite aspects of the club.
The completed facility will be able to accommodate 475 children per day, up from 400 children, and host several new programmes.
Construction in the background
At the Camarillo club Friday morning, about 15 kids queued up for their turn at the bounce house that marked the end of summer.
They talked and joked as a 6-month-old Goldendoodle named Parmesan weaved between them. Mixed in between the pup’s laughter and screams was the sound of construction equipment.
Since construction began, Boys & Girls Clubs should reduce the number of children they can serve. Last school year, around 125 to 150 children visited the club every day, down from 420 before construction, Martinez said.
The summer program is also affected. The club saw around 85 to 100 children a day this summer, he said. It served about 200 in the previous summer.
In addition, Boys & The Girls Club should take advantage of the available space within the facility and in the Pleasant Valley School District to continue offering its programs, said Martinez.

Once the project is complete, Martinez says the club will hire more help.
Four full-time staff members and approximately 30 part-time staff members currently work at the club. Martinez said he may need to hire one or two more full-time employees and six or seven part-time employees to help with additional children and programs.
Club member Makayla Guillen, 9, says her favorite part of the club is the fun she has with her friends and the Parmesan, which is owned by a staff member. He was also happy with the extra space to play after construction was complete.
Raelyn Farnsworth, 10, agrees. He misses the games room, which is currently closed, and the puzzles, board games, pool table, and table tennis tables.
Additional space will offer programs and rooms aimed at middle and high school students.
Two rooms will be dedicated to the planned Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics programmes. There will be learning labs, 3D printers, hands-on learning, and staff encouraging kids to make mistakes.
Kids may dislike math and science because they struggle or get bad grades in those subjects, says Martinez. By encouraging children to learn from their mistakes, they may realize that STEM subjects can be fun, he added.
STEM programs are inspired by feedback from local schools and businesses. By getting kids excited about science at a young age, they’ll be more likely to pursue local careers in STEM fields, says Martinez.
“They can live in our community,” Martinez said. “One thing we hear from local employers is they need more pathways for local talent to enter those careers.”
There will also be a sensorimotor room where children with special needs can rest in a quiet place. A new computer lab, art room and kitchen are also planned.
Boys & Girls Club doesn’t just change children’s lives. This also had a positive impact on Camarillo, according to a 2018 study by California Lutheran University.
Every dollar invested in Boys & The Girls Club in Ventura County generates a positive rate of return of $16.04 to the community, according to the study. It looks at the long-term economic benefits that come from Boys & Girls’ Clubs, including high school graduation rates, preventing teen pregnancy and reducing substance abuse.
“With rising inflation, rising cost of living and reduced affordable and accessible child care due to the recent pandemic, I imagine our club’s financial impact is even greater now,” Martinez said by email.
